The Bucs are believed to be talking to the Denver Broncos about a deal that would land them Walker, according to the Tampa Tribune. The Bucs are on the lookout this offseason for playmakers, and Walker is looking to get away from the Broncos, for whom he played in eight games last year before a knee injury. The Broncos are believed to be looking for an impact defensive tackle

Believe the reports that the Redskins are going to try to pry away Johnson in a trade, says the Denver Post. If Johnson isn't traded, the Redskins could turn their attention to Javon Walker, who, like Johnson, wants to be traded. Yet, unlike Cincinnati, Denver wants to accommodate Walker with a trade

It would take a major upset for the Bears not to cut Griese before he is due a $300,000 roster bonus next week, according to The Chicago Tribune. It would still be smart to keep him for 2008, thought that seems unlikely now with the Bears looking to draft a quarterback to hold a clipboard

Twenty-five players have entered the NFL as top-five overall draft choices since 2003.

Twelve of the 18 teams responsible for those selections haven't won a playoff game since drafting in the top five.

Ten failed to finish last season with a winning record.

Seven have made two top-five selections since 2003, but only one of them, the New York Jets, has a playoff victory to show for its investments.

Those seven teams -- Oakland, Detroit, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Arizona, Houston and the Jets -- have shown improvement in some cases. But only three of the 14 players they selected among the top five have appeared in a Pro Bowl. Former Lions receiver Charles Rogers, chosen second overall in 2003, isn't even in the league.

[+] EnlargeAP Photo/Bill Haber

In 2003, the Saints wanted Georgia DT Johnathan Sullivan bad enough to trade the 17th and 18th-overall draft picks for Arizona's sixth slot. Sullivan lasted three seasons in the NFL.

The draft always will be a guessing game to some extent, but with rookie salaries escalating sharply at the top of the draft by some measures, NFL teams appear increasingly wary of picking early.

Three teams have traded into the top 10 picks since 2003. The moves proved costly in more ways than one.

"Trades are a unique thing in the first round anymore because of the cost of the top 10 picks financially," Indianapolis Colts president Bill Polian said at the scouting combine. "To take on that cost, then to give up something to do so, it is almost counterintuitive, and that's clearly not what the draft was designed to be."

In 2003, the Saints sent the 17th and 18th choices as part of a package to Arizona for a package that included the sixth pick. New Orleans drafted Georgia defensive tackle Johnathan Sullivan, who was out of the league after 16 starts and three NFL seasons.

Also in 2003, the Jets traded the 13th and 22nd picks as part of a package to Chicago for the fourth overall choice. The Jets drafted defensive lineman Dewayne Robertson, a durable starter who hasn't become an impact player.

In 2005, Minnesota traded receiver Randy Moss to the Raiders for the seventh and 219th choices, plus linebacker Napoleon Harris. The Vikings used the seventh choice for receiver Troy Williamson, who has three touchdown catches in three seasons and appears finished in Minnesota.

Those deals were the exceptions.

No team has traded into the top 10 picks in the last two drafts. And no team since 1999 has traded into the top five overall spots from lower in the draft.

Five teams moved into the top five picks from 1993 to 1997, the first five years of NFL free agency in its current form.

While it's easy to say teams have become reluctant to move into the top five, the same evidence could be used to say teams are reluctant to part with those picks.

[+] EnlargeJed Jacobsohn/Getty Images

The Vikings traded up to select Troy Williamson (82) with the seventh overall pick in 2005. He has been a disappointment as a Viking.

Polian isn't buying.

If teams are going to risk missing out on players, the thinking goes, they might as well pay those players less by drafting them later.

"The draft was designed to either allow the weakest teams, based on record, to choose the best players, or if they chose not to take a particular player, to gather a bunch of picks to further accelerate their growth and competitiveness," Polian said. "That's what Mr. [George] Halas and commissioner [Bert] Bell intended way back when, and that's now been skewed completely by the cost of the picks in the top 15 picks in the first round."

Polian called for changes to the system, raising the possibility of more rigidly slotted salaries for draft choices, but the NFL Players Association sounds unsympathetic.

"You can get players on a given team to disagree on who should get what," NFLPA general counsel Richard Berthelson said. "One thing they agree on is, they don't want a wage scale."

Berthelson disputed that salaries have grown disproportionately at the top of the draft.

While option bonuses and creative incentives have made the most lucrative rookie contracts increasingly difficult to quantify, two agents contacted for this story said the top few draft choices have indeed realized gains above increases to the NFL's designated gross revenue, commonly known as DGR. The incentives, despite falling under the heading "NLTBE" -- not likely to be earned -- are often achieved by playing a relatively low percentage of snaps.

And because each team's spending allotment for draft choices applies only to the year in which a player was drafted, a team can get around its so-called rookie pool by writing fat NLTBE incentives into future years.

"The option bonus and NLTBE made all the increases arbitrary as opposed to in sync with DGR and rookie pools," one of the agents said. "We've gone from a soft cap and hard rookie pool to soft and soft.

"Teams and agents went down a slippery slope and here we are."

Of course, the guy making his third trip through the buffet line isn't in position to complain about the tightness of his belt. As Berthelson put it, "There is no contract in this league that exists without a club agreeing to it."

The top of the draft has always carried risk.

Fifteen teams exercised top-five picks between 1993 and 1997. Their experiences during that window were similar to what teams have gone through since 2003. Nine of the 15 failed to win a playoff game from 1993 to 1997. Nine of the 15 failed to finish with a winning record in 1997.

The issue is whether those teams paid as high a price in relation to salary-cap allotments. Berthelson said they essentially did. Polian said they did not.

"It's completely changed because of the cost of those picks, and in my view, that's wrong," Polian said. "That's bad for the game. It isn't about money, it's about the integrity of the game on the field."

Slotted salaries aren't the only potential solution.

One agent suggested reducing overall payouts to the highest picks in exchange for shorter contracts that allow players to become free agents earlier.

"It's true some clubs don't want to commit as much to a rookie," Berthelson said. "That is why you have trades. Trade it and get three or four other players, and spread it out on three or four players."

That might be easier said than done.

The Lions are moving closer to trading Rogers, and the Broncos are working hard to obtain the massive nose tackle, according to The Detroit News. The Lions, who will not release Rogers, face a deadline in making a deal because of a $1 million bonus payment due if Rogers is on the roster on March 1.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- After facing three batters in his Grapefruit League debut, Marlins right-hander Sergio Mitre was lifted because of right elbow discomfort.
Projected to be one of Florida's top three starters, Mitre was removed after walking Baltimore's Nick Markakis on five pitches.

Immediately after the walk, pitching coach Mark Wiley was accompanied by team trainer Sean Cunningham and manager Fredi Gonzalez to the mound. Mitre was replaced by Daniel Barone, who inherited two runners on with one out.

Mitre said he felt some discomfort on a changeup he threw two pitches before he walked Markakis.

"I just couldn't get loose," said Mitre, whose fastball was clocked in the 88-89 mph range on Thursday. "I was real stiff. I couldn't loosen up. I couldn't follow through on my pitches."

Mitre said he will get the elbow examined by physicians on Friday.

The 27-year-old comes off a 2007 season in which he finished 5-8 with a 4.65 ERA in 27 starts. He also logged an MLB career-high 149 innings.

Mitre struggled with his command on Thursday at Fort Lauderdale Stadium. He walked Brian Roberts to open the first, and Melvin Mora then reached on an error, which scored Roberts, who had stolen second and third.

Walking Markakis marked the end of Mitre's day.

Broncos use big plays to blow past the Titans
Associated Press

DENVER -- The Denver Broncos found new ways to make big plays and some little-known players to make them. Now suddenly, they find themselves in a spot they only could have dreamed of a few weeks ago -- tied for first place in the AFC West.

Jay Cutler threw touchdown passes of 41 and 48 yards and unheralded Glenn Martinez and Andre Hall added to Denver's frenzy of big scoring plays Monday night in a 34-20 victory over the Tennessee Titans.

The Broncos (5-5) set a franchise record with four touchdowns of longer than 40 yards.

Brandon Marshall celebrates as he scores on a 41-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter.

"We were overdue," said receiver Brandon Marshall, who caught the 41-yard touchdown pass. "Our offense, we finally exploded. Now we have to piggy back off this game."

Vince Young threw for a career high -- 305 yards -- for the second straight week, but this one also resulted in a loss for the Titans (6-4), who played catchup against Denver the same way they did in a 28-13 loss to Jacksonville last week.

"This was disgusting," Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan said. "The worst tackling game yet."

Martinez, a second-year receiver signed off the practice squad in September, returned a punt 80 yards to give Denver a 14-0 lead in the first.

Hall, a first-year player with eight carries this season, turned his ninth into a 62-yard score to help the Broncos regain control of the game after they'd watched a 17-point lead slip to seven.

Hall was in after Selvin Young, who started in place of Travis Henry, went out with a knee injury.

"He was our last tailback and Andre took advantage of his opportunity," coach Mike Shanahan said. "We needed a big play at that time, and that's one thing about the running game. You keep pounding and every once in a while, you break one of those."

The Broncos improved to .500, good enough to tie San Diego for the lead in the woeful West.

Suddenly, a team that has 44-7 and 41-3 losses on its wildly disparate scorecard this season, is playing like a legitimate contender. Denver piled up 359 yards against the Titans, who were missing Albert Haynesworth on the defensive line but nonetheless came in with the second-ranked defense in the league.

"This is our division," Marshall said. "It's always been our division. It's time for us to take it back. San Diego, Kansas City, they don't have the talent like us in the locker room. They have star players but can't get it done like us."

The polls are open! Fans can vote now to select players for the 2008 NFL Pro Bowl, to be played Feb. 10 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii. Voting continues through Dec. 11. Who do you want to see in the Pro Bowl? Vote here!

Maybe he shouldn't get too carried away. The Broncos were good, but far from perfect -- or anywhere near New England level on this night.

Martinez also muffed a punt that led to a Tennessee touchdown late in the third quarter to make the score 27-17.

That touchdown, a 4-yard run by Young, came after the second of two ill-advised timeouts called by Denver.

Broncos linebacker Nate Webster called a timeout just before the snap on third-and-goal from the 1, a play in which Young came up short of the end zone as he reached for the pylon.

But the timeout gave Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher a chance to review the previous play, in which Young scored on a similar play but had been ruled out of bounds at the 1.

At the end of the first half, Shanahan, trying to duplicate the move that helped him foil Oakland kicker Sebastian Janikowski's game-winning attempt several weeks ago, called timeout a split second before Rob Bironas tried a 56-yarder before halftime.

Bironas' kick sailed about 20 yards wide of the goalpost, but given another chance, he nailed it to trim Tennessee' deficit to 20-10.

"Don't anybody ever question me about those field goals and timeouts again," said Shanahan, who started a trend with that timeout against Oakland. "I told you this would happen sooner or later. You live by the sword and die by the sword."

And really, this one wasn't so much about field goals as big plays for the Broncos.

A team that had only one touchdown of 20 yards or more all season on offense got its second early, when Cutler found Brandon Stokley in the middle of the field and Stokley outran the Titans defense for a 48-yard score.

On the first drive of the third quarter, Cutler found Marshall in single coverage on Calvin Lowry, who went for the ball and missed, allowing Marshall to score for a 27-10 lead.

Official site links ...
Vince Young passed for a career-high 305 yards and ran for 74 more on the ground, but the Denver Broncos registered a 34-20 victory on Monday Night Football. More ...

Denver's four touchdowns came on plays of more than 40 yards, highlighted by Glenn Martinez's 80-yard punt return in the first quarter that led to a Broncos win. More ... Cutler lost the stats matchup to Young, his 2006 draft classmate, finishing 16-for-21 for 200 yards. But Cutler got the win and a gaudy quarterback rating of 137.0 to go with it.

Selvin Young finished with 54 yards for Denver before leaving with a twisted knee.

That could set the stage for Hall, who could start next week against Chicago if Young is hurt and the Broncos are without Henry, who is awaiting the league's decision on results of a positive drug test. Henry was inactive against Tennessee with a knee injury.

The Titans, meanwhile, have lost two straight and hardly looked like the team that appeared poised to push Indianapolis in the AFC South.

The defense got beat up for the second straight week. Last time, it was on the ground (166 yards against Jacksonville) and this time by the big play.

"It all came down to missed tackles," Fisher said. "We had missed tackle on the long touchdown run, missed tackles on the long touchdown pass play. That's the problem with missed tackles."

Meanwhile, the receivers dropped no fewer than four easy catches, including one by Brandon Jones, who got behind Champ Bailey but bobbled the pass, which helped stall a promising drive on the opening possession.

Notes: Titans RB LenDale White, a Denver native, had 56 ticket requests. He finished the game with 42 yards on 13 carries and a lost fumble in the second quarter. ... Ian Gold had a huge game for Denver with eight tackles, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

The Vikings reached the final stages of negotiations Monday night to send receiver Troy Williamson to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a sixth-round pick in the 2008 draft, according to two sources with knowledge of the trade.

A few secondary items remain unresolved. But those issues should be ironed out by 11 p.m. Thursday, when the NFL's trading and free-agency period officially begins. Officials from both teams are prohibited from commenting until then.

Reached by telephone Monday night, Williamson said he was unaware the deal had been completed and declined further comment. In Jacksonville, he would be reunited with former Vikings coach Mike Tice, now the Jaguars assistant head coach.

Speaking Friday, when the Vikings gave agent David Canter permission to seek a trade, Williamson said: "When things don't go the way I feel they should have gone, of course I'm disappointed. But I've made it work for me and tried to be positive in everything I do."

The deal enables the Vikings some grace in parting ways with one of their all-time draft busts. The No. 7 overall pick in 2005, Williamson caught 79 passes for 1,067 yards and three touchdowns with the Vikings.

His three-year career has been more notable for the catches he hasn't made. His speed made him the prototypical deep threat, but his inability to judge the long pass was a constant source of frustration for the Vikings.

A Nike specialist determined last spring that his left eye was stronger than the right, causing depth perception problems. But prescribed exercises made little difference last season. Drops are not an official NFL statistic, but observers conservatively estimated he had at least 25 in 39 career games.

Williamson ran into controversy off the field as well. In 2006, he was punched by a security guard during a charity concert sponsored by safety Darren Sharper. His fate with the Vikings seemed sealed midway through last season; team officials temporarily withheld his paycheck after he left the team for nine days following the death of his grandmother.

The Vikings are expected to make the receiver position one of their primary targets in the free-agent period. Chicago's Bernard Berrian could be their top choice.

MURTHY THOUGHTS!

Murphy thinks Favre will return
By Don Walker
Wednesday, Feb 27 2008, 02:27 PM
Mark Murphy, the Green Bay Packers' new president and CEO, told a Milwaukee luncheon crowd today that he believed Packers quarterback Brett Favre will return next season.

"My guess is that he will come back," Murphy said at a lunch sponsored by the Milwaukee Press Club.

Murphy said that he had spoken with Favre a couple of times, but did not say how those conversations went.

"We all anticipate that he'll make a decision very soon," he said. "Probably this week some time. Before the end of the month."

Murphy said Favre was still playing at a high level, a statement echoed many times by Head Coach Mike McCarthy.

"I do think that he gives us the best chance to win a Super Bowl this year," Murphy said.

Since Murphy took over for Bob Harlan, he has consistently said that he wants General Manager Ted Thompson and Head Coach Mike McCarthy to run the football operation.

But Murphy, a former pro football player himself with the Washington Redskins, provided a little insight into the decision making Favre is going through.

"It's not as easy a decision as some people might think," he said, alluding to the grind of preparation during the off season and during the season.

"He wants to make sure he's ready to put himself through that again," Murphy said.

Feb. 28: The New York Daily News reports that the Jets, who are usually reluctant to open their checkbook in free agency, might be willing to spend big to go after Pro Bowl guard Alan Faneca. The team waived Adrien Clark this week and getting Faneca to fill the hole on the left side will cost the Jets, as Faneca could command at least $19 million in guarantees

Feb. 27: The Detroit Free Press is reporting that Jets LB Jonathan Vilma was in the Detroit area for a physical and to explore a trade to the Lions. Detroit head coach Rod Marinelli, however, declined to address any trade rumors. “It hurts us... We’re just talking. Nothing’s changed," he said. The Jets gave Vilma permission to seek a trade to any team with the exception of the New England Patriots.

Titans defensive ends Antwan Odom and Travis LaBoy appear ready to test the waters in free agency. The Tennessean reported Wednesday that Odom and LaBoy -- both expected to become unrestricted free agents on Friday -- and their respective agents have indicated that the players and the team are far apart in terms of negotiating a new contract. "The difference in what the Titans are offering and what the market is dictating, it is a lot different," said C.J. LaBoy, who represents his brother. "I wouldn't be surprised if the Titans don't have either of them back next year
